Ruth M. O’Regan, MD

Dr. Ruth O’Regan is Associate Professor of Hematology & Medical Oncology and Director of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Program at Emory Winship Cancer Institute. She is a Georgia Cancer Coalition (GCC) Distinguished Cancer Scholar and holds the Glenn Family Chair in breast cancer research. Prior to her work at Winship, she served as assistant professor of medicine at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, where she worked with leading authority Dr. V. Craig Jordan, studying the mechanisms of selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) resistance. Since joining the faculty at the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, she has continued her research in SERM-resistance. Her laboratory also focuses on the use of nanoparticles conjugated to antibodies to detect and quantify proteins important in breast carcinogenesis. She has also been involved in clinical research at the World Cancer Institute, and was the principal investigator of Georgia CORE’s first trials. She is widely published in peer reviewed scientific journals, and speaks nationally on breast cancer, including the use of hormonal and targeted therapies.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Dr. O’Regan received her Doctor of Medicine at University College in Dublin. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Oncology at Mater Hospital in Dublin. She completed her U.S. residency and a fellowship at Northwestern University. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Dr. O’Regan is a member of the breast cancer scientific committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (GASCO).

With the help of the Avon Foundation, she has developed a multidisciplinary breast cancer clinic at the Grady Cancer Center for Excellence. Dr. O’Regan is director of the Glenn Family Breast Cancer Fund, conducting research into the differences in breast cancer subtypes in pre- and post-menopausal women. She also directs the Jean Sindab Project Research Team, which focuses on triple negative beast cancers in African-American women.
